IT Consulting & Fractional CTO · Dallas–Fort Worth

A CTO for the hours you need one, not the salary you cannot afford.

IT consulting and fractional CTO work gives a small company an experienced technology lead on a part-time basis: strategy, planning, software and vendor decisions, budgeting and the implementation that follows. It is for Dallas businesses with 5 to 50 people that have outgrown ad-hoc IT but cannot justify a full-time technology executive.

What you get

IT Consulting & Fractional CTO for Small Companies in Dallas

Decisions made once, with the whole picture

Which software to standardize on, whether to keep the server, what to spend on computers this year. You get a clear recommendation, the reasoning behind it and a plan to carry it out, instead of three vendor quotes and a headache.

A budget that matches the business

A written IT plan for the next twelve months: what to replace, what to renew, what to stop paying for and roughly what it costs. No surprise renewals and no equipment bought in a panic after something fails.

Someone on your side of the table

When a software vendor, phone company or internet provider pitches you, I sit on your side and translate. I do not resell what I recommend, so the advice is not shaped by a commission.

Included

What is included

  • IT strategy and a twelve-month technology plan tied to how the business makes money
  • Architecture and design: how computers, servers, cloud services, network and phones should fit together
  • Software and vendor selection, including reading the contracts before you sign
  • Budgeting: replacement cycles for computers and network equipment, license reviews, recurring cost cleanup
  • Implementation and integration of what was decided, with your staff kept working throughout
  • Security and backup review against cyber-insurance questionnaires and industry duties such as HIPAA
  • Optimization: fixing the slow, expensive or fragile parts of an existing setup
  • Planning for growth events: a second location, a new office, a merger or a jump in headcount

Consulting and fractional CTO work is billed hourly or on a monthly retainer, and I quote it after a conversation about what you need. There is no published rate because a two-hour software decision and a six-month office build-out are different jobs. Implementation can be included in the same engagement or handled under managed IT. See pricing.

A good fit if

  • Dallas companies with 5 to 50 people facing a real technology decision: new software, a move, a growth spurt, a security review
  • Owners who want a recommendation and a plan, not a sales pitch dressed up as advice
  • Firms that need someone to own IT decisions between quarterly reviews without hiring a full-time executive

Probably not if

  • Companies that need a full-time, on-premises CTO or a software engineering leader
  • Custom software development projects; I plan and integrate business systems, I do not write your product
  • Businesses looking for a free assessment as the opening move of a sales process

How it works

What happens after you get in touch

Discovery

I look at what you have: every device, subscription, contract and the way work actually flows through the office. I talk to the people who use the systems, not just the owner, because that is where the real problems are.

Plan

You get a written plan in plain English: what to keep, what to change, in what order, and what each step costs. Short enough that you will read it, specific enough that anyone could execute it.

Implement

I do the work with my team, or manage the vendors who do it. Migrations, new equipment, network changes and software rollouts are scheduled around your busy periods and tested before your staff depend on them.

Stay on as needed

Some clients keep me on a small monthly retainer for ongoing decisions and vendor calls. Others move to managed IT, where the plan becomes the standard I maintain. Either way you are not paying for a seat that sits empty.

Deeper dives

  • Hire an internal IT person or use an MSP?A full-time IT hire is the right move for some Dallas businesses and an expensive mistake for others. Here is how to tell which one you are, and what your options are if the salary is out of reach.
  • What a small business should budget for IT each yearAn IT budget is five buckets, not one line. Here are the buckets, typical yearly ranges per employee, a sample budget for a 10-person Dallas office, and where owners overspend and underspend.
  • Starting a business in Dallas: the IT checklistInternet, email, computers, Wi-Fi, backups, security, phones and, if you are building out, cabling. Here is the order to do it in and what each step involves, from the person who plans all of it.

Which IT consulting firm should a small company in Dallas use?

Use one that passes three tests: the person advising you has run technology for organizations bigger than yours, the same person stays accountable through the implementation instead of handing you off, and they are selling advice rather than hardware. Most IT consulting firms in Dallas fail at least one of them, usually the second, because the senior person who wins the engagement hands it to a rotating bench of analysts. I am Anthony Omini. I have spent over 15 years in IT across many industries and global organizations, I own and run Cross River Tech and stay your contact from the first conversation to the last change, and I do not resell the products I recommend, so the advice you get is the advice I would give myself.

Size matters too. Below about five people, a good managed IT plan is usually all the strategy you need. Above about fifty, you probably need someone in the building every day. In between sits the company with real technology decisions to make, a real budget on the line, and nobody whose job it is to get those decisions right. That is the company a fractional CTO is for.

What does a typical consulting engagement look like?

Six jobs come up again and again for Dallas companies with five to fifty people. Each starts with discovery and a written plan, and most end with me doing the implementation.

  1. Outgrowing the first setup. A company that started with six people and a consumer router now has twenty-five and daily complaints about Wi-Fi, shared drives and passwords. I assess what is there, design what it should be and phase the changes in.
  2. Choosing or replacing core software. Moving a law firm to Clio or a dental office to a new practice management platform is a business decision with IT consequences. I help pick, plan the migration and make sure the hardware and network are ready.
  3. A new office or a second location. Internet, cabling, phones, network, workstations and the timeline that ties them together, with the general contractor and the landlord in the loop. The IT checklist for a new business in Dallas is the starting point.
  4. Cyber-insurance and compliance questions. The renewal form asks about multi-factor authentication, backups and endpoint protection. I translate the questions, close the gaps and give you honest answers to put on the form.
  5. Computer refresh and budgeting. Dell or Lenovo, laptops or desktops, what specification an AutoCAD or Revit user needs versus an administrator, and how to spread the spend across the year. What a small business should budget for IT each year shows how I build the number.
  6. A second opinion on your current IT company. If you suspect you are overpaying or under-served, I review the agreement and the setup and tell you plainly whether it is fine, needs renegotiating or needs replacing.

How is the implementation scheduled around a working office?

Around your busy periods, not mine. Email migrations happen after hours or over a weekend. New computers are set up and tested before the old ones leave the desk. Staff get a short, plain explanation of what changed and what to do differently. Everything is tested before you depend on it and documented afterwards, so whoever supports you next, even if it is not me, can see how it was built.

When the plan calls for construction work, I do that part too: cabling and the IT room for a new suite, or planning and executing an office move. Because the person who recommended the change is the one accountable for carrying it out, with my team working from the same plan, there is no gap between the design and the reality, and nobody to blame but me if it does not work.

Do I need a consultant, managed IT or an internal IT person?

A consultant for decisions and projects, managed IT for keeping things running every day, and an internal hire only once there is a full week of IT work, which is usually well past fifty people. A lot of owners searching for IT consulting firms in Dallas really need managed IT, and some who ask about managed IT really need a plan first. Sorting that out honestly is part of the first conversation, even when it means recommending the cheaper option.

You needBest fitHow it is billed
A decision made or a project deliveredConsulting / fractional CTOHourly or retainer, quoted
Everything kept running, every dayManaged IT servicesPer user or per device, monthly
Something fixed today, no commitmentBreak/fix supportHourly, published rates
Forty-plus hours of IT work every weekInternal IT employeeSalary and benefits

The longer comparison lives in hire an internal IT person or use an MSP. A fractional CTO plus managed IT gives most small Dallas companies the judgement of a senior technology lead and the coverage of an IT department for far less than one salary.

When is the right time to bring in a fractional CTO?

Before you sign, not after. The cheapest hour of consulting is the one that happens before a software contract, a lease or a large hardware order is committed, because that is when a bad choice still costs nothing to undo. Other good moments: the office manager has quietly become the IT department, a cyber-insurance renewal is asking questions nobody can answer, headcount has doubled since the network was built, or you are about to open a second location.

Hourly billing suits a defined question such as reviewing a contract, comparing two software options or designing a network for a new suite. A monthly retainer suits ongoing leadership: a fixed number of hours each month for planning, vendor calls, staff questions and the steady stream of small decisions that otherwise land on the owner. There is no minimum term on a retainer, project work comes with a written scope, and the pricing page lays consulting, managed IT and hourly support side by side. To find out which one you need, call (214) 612-7080 or use the contact page and tell me what you are trying to decide.

Questions people ask about it consulting & fractional cto

What does a fractional CTO do for a small company?

A fractional CTO owns the technology decisions a small company would otherwise leave to chance: what systems to run, what to spend, which vendors to use, how to protect data and how to prepare for growth. The work is part-time, billed hourly or on a retainer, and it includes putting the plan into practice, not just writing it. For a Dallas company with 5 to 50 people it replaces a full-time executive salary with a few hours a month of senior judgement.

How is IT consulting different from managed IT services?

Consulting is about decisions and projects: choosing software, planning a move, setting a budget, fixing an architecture that has grown badly. Managed IT is the day-to-day work of keeping computers, servers, network and email running for a monthly fee. Many clients use both, with consulting to set the direction and managed IT to maintain it. If you are not sure which you need, the first call sorts that out.

How much does IT consulting cost in Dallas?

I quote consulting after a conversation, because a two-hour contract review and a six-month office build-out are not the same job. Work is billed hourly for defined questions or on a monthly retainer for ongoing leadership, with a written scope so you know what is included. There is no minimum term on a retainer. If you need something fixed today rather than planned, hourly break/fix support has published rates.

Do you resell the hardware or software you recommend?

No. I work with vendors such as Dell Technologies, Lenovo, Microsoft, Pax8, RevGen Networks and Cleod 9 Voice, and I will source equipment and licenses on your behalf when that is convenient, but the recommendation is not tied to a commission. If the right answer is to keep what you have or buy from someone I do not work with, that is what I will tell you.

Can you also do the implementation, or only the planning?

Both, and that is the point. The person who writes the plan stays accountable for carrying it out: I plan and oversee migrations, new equipment, network changes, software rollouts and coordination with your general contractor or internet provider, with my team handling the routine parts behind me. Implementation is scheduled around your busy periods and tested before your staff depend on it. Afterwards, most clients keep the standard I set through managed IT, though that is a separate decision.

Do you work with companies outside Dallas?

Yes. Planning and most implementation work happen remotely, so I take consulting clients anywhere in Texas, including companies with offices in Dallas and Houston or Austin. Onsite visits are by appointment and are easiest across the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. For a multi-location business the value is usually in making one good decision that applies everywhere, which does not depend on being in the building.
